The history of Piacenza wines goes back a long way, as early as the first century B.C. there is evidence of wine cultivation in the valleys near the river PO.
Cicero himself, in his writings, accused Piso, the father of Calpurnia, Julius Caesar's wife, of 'drinking large goblets of Piacenza wine'.

Red sparkling wine “Gutturnio”
Made from Barbera and Croatina grapes, It is the best known and most widespread wine from Piacenza.
Gutturnio is produced both still and sparkling. It has a ruby red colour, brilliant with varying intensity, a characteristic aroma with a fresh, young flavour.
The name of this wine derives from 'Gutturnium', an ancient amphora that the ancient Romans used to share wine at the end of their dinners.
Sparkling Gutturnio goes well with cured meats, cheeses and first courses.
Still Gutturnio is perfect with grilled meat and stews.
Dessert wine “Malvasia”
Aromatic Malvasia di Candia is a white wine made from the Malvasia grapes of the Piacenza hills.
Cultivated in Piacenza, it is the richest and most interesting of the 17 existing varieties: excellent for both still and sparkling wines, it carries hints of citrus, flowers and herbaceous notes. The Malvasia di Candia grape variety has always been considered among the most prized.
In 1498, the Duke of Milan rewarded Leonardo da Vinci with a vineyard of aromatic Malvasia di Candia, the same type that is still cultivated in Piacenza today.

Piacenza can boast a long tradition of brut classic method sparkling wines, on a par with much more famous Italian and European territories. Historical evidence proves that sparkling wines were consumed as far back as ancient Rome.
